Diamond Weights- The Almighty Carat
By Sasha Quassar
Diamond Weights- The Almighty Carat Diamonds, like all gemstones, are measured in Carat Weight. One carat weighs 0.2grams. One of the other measurement commonly used is the grain. A four grain Diamond is equvilaent to one Carat. Where do these unusual measurements come from? During ancient times, long before the invention of the scale, the weight of the diamonds was equited to the standardized means. One of the accepted standards was the use of "carob". This is a bean that grows on a tree, readily found in the Mediterranean. Majority of the barter and trade was concetrated in this region, thus standardizing the terminology for future generations. At that time if a diamond is of equal weight to one "Carob" then that diamond is one Carat. Obviously the natural variation of the "Carob" will yield different weights, thus producing various size of "one" Carat Diamond. Generations later, the solution was to take the average weight of the "Carob" which was equated to 200 milligrams, or 0.2 grams. The other common term the "Grain" have similar background. In the Far East the "Carob" does not grow. Their solution was to use abundant material, namely rice, henceforth the term "Grain". If a diamond weighed four grains of rice, it was four Grains – or one carat as we know it to be now. With the invention of the metric system, some of the techniques were incorporated with diamonds as well. One Carat diamond is divided in to 100 points. What this means is that 10 point Diamond is 0.1 Carats. Quarter Carat diamond is 0.25 carats and so forth. One thing to watch out for when shopping for diamonds that are already set or mounted is the CTW. If more than one Diamond is used in the piece, the tag on the Jewelry will give the CTW or Carat Total Weight – this does not tell you the carat weight of individual stone in the piece. Make sure You ask the jeweler for the individual carat weight of each diamond. This also applies if the jewelry contains a mixture of diamond and other gemstones. Make sure you understand what you are buying.
